When I moved back from the US, after 15 years working in entertainment, all I had was a suitcase of my absolute favourite secondhand finds. But did anything go together? No. Was it all random? Yes! A mismatch of identities, ideas and values. A bit like me when I returned home.
It was the summer of 2019 and in between galavanting around the UK and catching up with friends, I realised I had to get a job.
I had to look like I had my life together. That’s what the power look is all about. It’s an oasis of possibilities, it's a silhouette of strength. An outfit that is unapologetically strong.
But how do you source THAT on a budget?
What you need to remember is that the power look is subjective. There are so many shapes and styles to be on the lookout for. Two piece sets are such a power statement and brilliant because you can obviously wear different ways. But also a playsuit works, trousers and a vintage shirt also looks boss. So figure out what style makes you feel powerful.

This was the suit from the 90s that I sourced for just £8 for my first job interview back in the UK. It said something. Like I care, I’m hardworking but I also have gravity and depth. I have experience but also a little soul. Paired with a trendy top and I was ready to talk business.
How To Source The Power Look
Remember a good quality suit should never be dismissed. If it’s not exactly your style or size, that’s where a good tailor comes in. You can always tighten, loosen and customise it to make it your very own.
The power look comes in all forms; symmetrical shapes, premium fabrics, statement necklines and structured cuts. Look out for blaser dresses, jumpsuits, and shapes that make you feel comfortable. After all, when you are relaxed and grounded, that’s when you can truly be yourself.
Here are my power look secrets:
Look for shapes and cuts that have a timeless appeal to them and are not trend driven
Look for any obvious blemishes like large stains, holes, or overly-stretched fabric.
Think past what you see. Alterations really can make the power look
Whether it be for a job interview, business meeting, hard core power date, looking and feeling powerful is all about knowing your own style and everything to do with the cut and fit. Look out for quality fabric, invest in premium secondhand brands and always, always take note of the detail.
