Styling secondhand outfits for formal events is an art in itself. It takes effort, care and attention to detail when it comes to celebrating in style without going beyond your budget. And the main question is why would you want to break the bank when occasion wear are the items that you generally get the least amount of wear from.
Depending on the event you have been invited to and whether or not they assigned a dress code, we see and understand your dilemma and are here to guide you through it. Ask yourself the following questions…What? When? and Where?
What?
The first step to figuring out what to source secondhand for your upcoming occasion is knowing the type of event. Is it a gala, a wedding, a formal charity event, a cocktail party, or a night at the opera? I like to make a list of the types of events I’m likely to be invited to- weddings and cocktails seem to always make an appearance, and then I keep my eyes peeled for outfits that would be suitable for both and purchase in advance of any specific invites. That way I always have some one-of-a-kind pieces ready to go when the event does arrive. It also leaves time for any alterations that may need to be made, as tailoring is crucial when it comes to making preloved look premium.
When?
The next step is knowing what time of day the event is scheduled. Is the event in the evening, or is it a mid-day affair? Does it start in the afternoon and transition into the evening? This can certainly alter the type of outfit you may want to look out for. Day-to-evening occasion wear can be easily sourced as generally there are more options available and it doesn’t have to be a typical cocktail dress. I love a jumpsuit, waistcoat and flared trouser combo, tea-party dress or even a top and skirt combo. Remember, your accessories can alter the type of hour you are ready for as well. Add a fascinator for the day and think about unlayering your look, to help you transition your outfit so you are ready for the cocktail hour.
Where?
The next step is knowing where the event is being held? A banquet hall, church, restaurant, art gallery, hotel ballroom, stately home, or outside under a beautiful tent? Consider sourcing additional secondhand pieces to make sure your look is comfortable in the setting. Will you need a shawl? Will a blazer be of use? Perhaps a little faux fur when you stand outside the church. These additional items are likely to be pieces that you can wear time and time again post formal occasion.
After answering all these questions, you should now have the confidence to select the perfect attire for your formal event.
You have many options, from the little black dress, colorful jumpsuit, an A-line gown, or a formal knee-length cocktail dress; you can't go wrong. No matter what you choose to wear. Just remember, you don’t need a million to look like a million. All you need is secondhand styling.
