This is such a fun section. Cloaks of armour are an exciting way to experience decades of fashion all within one wardrobe. The craftsmanship behind a coat should never be sacrificed.
When I lived in NYC I shared an apartment with a designer who later became one of my best friends. Watching his passion, focus and eye for detail as he built masterpieces in our very own home was such a wonderful and very special experience that I’m lucky to have been part of.
He always designed one of a kind pieces, which would cost a fair bit. An expense I could never justify as I scrambled my way through debt as a struggling artist. However, watching his work taught me about the importance of quality. I remembered the intense workmanship and attention that went into creating a coat to be remembered. Every coat told a story. From the pockets to the zips- each piece of hardware was chosen with purpose and intention in mind.

The ironic part to what I am saying right now about my love for coats is that I returned to the UK with no coat at all. I had to start from scratch, which was magical. I discovered patterns, colour, vibrancy and fabric that some might shy away from but I saw them as statement pieces. I invested in vintage jackets. I even found this All Saints leather jacket which was always on my fashion wishlist- can you imagine my delight when I found it in a charity shop for just £15? I also love how these coats have already been lived in- travelled and loved. And now I get to wear them in my own new chapter.
So when you are sourcing second hand coats here’s what to remember.
- Be prepared to spend a little more- it’s worth it. Especially if it's a designer.
- Look out for vintage coats. They were made so well back in the day and honestly, will never go out of fashion. I adore the designs from the 50’s.
- A mac is timeless. When you see one. Buy it.
- Oversized is good! A larger coat can be a real gem in the closet.
I guarantee if you stick to these tips, especially keeping your eyes open in the summer you will score a selection of coats that will make everyone swoon when it comes to wearing them in the Winter. And, if you want to add a little something to your finds, you can always personalise them with a new label to give that extra touch. Your monogrammed number could be later be someone else’s vintage in the future.
