Second-hand is the new brand-new, especially when it comes to clothes. Not only does does secondhand styling help empower millions of shoppers across the world when it comes to looking and feeling good for less, but when you source pre-loved you are also being kind the planet.

New research by second-hand marketplace Depop has found that, despite a cost of living crisis, 44% of 18-35 year olds in the UK are buying more clothing now than they did last year, spending an average around £1,248 per year on new clothing. In fact, 30% of respondents are spending at least double that.

In total, the research found that this age group is spending a collective average of £1.6 billion per month on fashion.

However, over half said they’d been turning to second -and shopping to save some money, and it’s paying off. And I know that YOU are one of them!

Those who buy second-hand estimate they are saving up to 25% per item. That’s an average of £2.8 billion a year across all purchases. So how do we keep the “Secondhand Saving” momentum going?

The truth is, everyday items are called this for a reason. They are worn on the daily and will hardly ever go out of fashion. Meaning that there is a chance you could overspend when it comes to your “everyday” section when curating your capsule wardrobe. Because you will always be able to justify the need for a well made, well designed everyday item.

So here are my top 5 saving hacks when it comes to finding those pre-loved treasures that look premium for less.

Staples for your own style

I’m sure you have read the tips on how to source staple items for your capsule wardrobe, but a common misconception that so many of my clients have when I’m styling them is that they fall into a trap of thinking that everyone must have the same staple items. The truth is, your style determines the types of staple items you need.

For example if you like to dress more on the edgy side of fashion, I would recommend a black silk dress, a leather jacket and some no-nonsense biker boots. But if you steer more towards the polished side of style, then you want to make room for those traditional classic items such as a blazer, white shirt and timeless jeans. Whatever your style, take time to consider the staples that will work for you.

Opt for timeless classic cuts

Building an expensive-looking wardrobe doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. What’s more important is the kind of clothing that you buy. Rather than spending money on trend-led pieces, consider investing in items that are of higher quality with a classic cut, that have been designed and made to last. Items that will stand the test of time no matter the decade. Think classic crisp white shirts, a navy blazer or a little black dress.

Get your clothing tailored

An easy way to look luxurious is to get your clothing tailored at a local seamstress to make sure you get that perfect fit. Nobody will ever know that your pre-loved treasure only cost you £5 plus alterations. It may delay you wearing the garment for a few days, but if it gets nipped and tucked to fit you like a glove it will be worth it. It can easily take a garment from high street to high fashion, without the high fashion price tag!

Care for your clothes

So often, we see harsh washing powders, bleaches, sprays, and other chemicals as our only option for washing our clothing, but what is the long term impact of these on our clothing? These harsh chemicals can wear down the fibers of our clothes, make them more susceptible to holes, and fade their colour, let alone the environmental damage they cause. This will shorten their lifespan and mean that you end up spending more money on relplacing them. It’s more cost-effective to maintain the quality of your clothing by using more environmentally aligned laundry products with fewer chemicals (avoiding plastic if you can).
