How To Look Good in Bad Weather

As the colder weather approaches, we know it can be hard to start dressing warmer and keep an elevated and chic style. To combat this, we’re here with some advice on brightening up your style for the bad weather and dressing warmer while still managing a more elevated wardrobe.

See through umbrella

Now this might sound strange to start with, but if you give us a second, we’ll explain. You see, not only are umbrellas constantly needed in the UK, but they are also usually a different colour or pattern from what you are wearing, ruining the outfit while you’re out and about. However, with a clear umbrella, you get the benefit of the plastic being see-through, meaning it will match all your outfits and people can see said outfit, but they are really cool to see in the street. The bonus of having such an interesting accessory that you will want to use should be enough to convince you. It convinces us.

Scarfs - can spice up a pair of jeans a coat or bag

Scarfs are not just for keeping you warm, they can also add a lot of depth and interest to any outfit. These small pockets of colour are great for monochrome outfits that need something to help it pop or for when a more straightforward outfit needs to be brought to the next level.

Some great ideas of how to add a scarf to your outfit is by using it as a belt on your jeans or coats, by adding them to your bags or by embracing ascots.

By using your scarfs as a belt, you can make your outfit more unique and stylish while also solving a problem many of us have where the back of our jeans are just a bit too big. That’s okay, add a scarf through two of the loops then tie it into a bow to cinch in your jeans at the waist with the added benefit of a lovely accessory (you can pick these up at most charity shops for very cheap). This also works for coats as well!

Another option is to add them to your bags to add a pop of colour and pattern and more detail to something such as a plain black handbag. Scarfs act as a great accessory for bags as all shapes and sizes work to tie around a strap.

However, if that's not your vibe, we also suggest using these as hair accessories. This may seem like a more girly approach; however, more feminine styles are currently in trend. Using a silk scarf as a hair accessory is quite easy and versatile, with many different types.

Jazzy socks

Jazzy socks may seem childish, but they will up your shoe game and really level up your outfits. Bringing some much-needed colour to outfits during the horrible weather in the UK is essential and a really easy way to do this is through your socks. Not only do jeans and trainers need socks as well; don’t be afraid to bust out some colour when wearing skirts. It makes showing off your socks so much easier!

If the idea of colourful socks doesn’t appeal to you, don’t worry; you can still participate. Lace and mesh socks are becoming increasingly popular and look beautiful paired with all outfits. They are also much easier to style in our opinion as white lace is an easier colour to style than bright yellow and purple polka dots.

Want something more out there? Great! We think it’s a great time for you to try socks with your heels. We promise we’re not crazy. This trend has been around for quite some time now, and layering socks and heels grows on you. Trust us and try it because lace and mesh socks look incredible and really level up your outfits. However, wool socks also look fantastic and allow you to wear heels in the colder weather… score!

Layering

Layering is a very powerful tool and is so easy to do once you’ve made the learning curve. Using different textures, patterns, and materials is a great way to start, try adding a knit shirt underneath a slip dress or a patterned shirt tucked into a skirt.

If it is particularly cold, try layering shirts and jackets under a coat for the layered effect peeking out. A great idea we love is to wear a leather blazer under a black camel coat; when you pull out the lapels and collar you get a brand-new coat with leather details and extra warmth as a bonus.

Dresses are also great for layering as jumpers, sweater vests, and blazers always look incredible when paired with any type of dress. Here at SHSUK this is one of our favourite ways to wear our dresses in the cold weather.

Accessorising

When it comes to the colder weather and having to start wrapping up again, jewellery and accessories can be the best aspect of your wardrobe. Accessories help to really bring together an outfit and we promise there's a lot of variation for the colder months.

For starters, earrings can be amazing for an outfit, chunky or statement earrings should be a must in your wardrobe for those days when all you want to wear is a warm black turtleneck. Although some delicate hoops or studs are also great to have to help pull in complementary colours to your outfit which can really elevate your wardrobe.

Next rings are perfect to make an outfit seem more delicate, with more artistic rings you also have the benefit of bringing a lot of attention to your hands (great for if you've just had your nails done).

Necklaces and bracelets are also great ways to elevate your outfits as sometimes wrapping up warmer can really make you look quite boxy, by adding necklaces and even matching bracelets, you can lengthen your arms and neck or add more detail to the plainer parts.

Now this last one may sound a bit crazy but trust us because sunglasses can be the perfect addition to colder weather outfits. Remember it can still be sunny even in the cold and sunglasses in cold weather just look so chic to us.

We hope this has inspired you to elevate your wardrobe in the colder weather as autumn approaches. We know that these will be used by the SHSUK team through these colder months.
