Styling the oversized look

An emphasis on volume is one trend that did not go unnoticed at Copenhagen fashion show. As much as I am all about us setting and recreating our trends as individuals, it certainly pays to keep an eye on what the masses are doing in the fashion world, and oversized is it.

Which sparks the questions as to why is the baggy trend on the runways?

The Baggy style is a style that should not be ignored, and there's a big reason why. Here's why we need to let loose this season.

The first time this particular trend came around, in the 1980s, it coincided with the rise of the gym and a new, super-muscular vision of the male body on the pages of GQ and billboards for Calvin Klein Underwear.

Aesthetically, The oversized look is wonderfully unfussy and offers an air of unmessable confidence. And, of course, the more fabric, the more substantial it feels hence, why you feel like a boss or superhero when you commit to this trend.

So how do you source and curate the oversized look so that it looks modern and current?

Top-heavy is the way to go. Be unapologetically ready with shoulders to be remmebered. In the 80s, they knew what they were doing. coathanger-esque tailoring or baggy, drop-shouldered shirts? whatever your preference, commit and make sure that your bottom half is tapered with jeans/ slacks/ trousers that bring the attention inwards.

You can afford to wear longer and larger coats this season. We are in the post-pandemic era, which means that we are craving safety and stability as a society. Waft your way through spring with oversized coats, teamed with Dr martins, clunky boots or converse, giving a grounded and long lasting impression.

Yes, I realise that not every one of these oversized looks is suitable for the office. Or, indeed, anything less stuffy than stepping out of a car on your way to a fashion show. But for those who are opposed to half measures, this style is for you.

Source the oversized numbers that are made well, crafted with premium fabric, and designed to last. These are the pre-loved items that will keep the look centered around volume, current and ready for today's agenda.
