It sounds quite easy to style a long skirt or dress, right? Either with heels or a pair of trainers for a casual or classier look, but how do we take it to the next level? We here at Second Hand Styling hear all the time about how women find it intimidating and difficult to wear long skirts and not let them wear you. This is what we will be looking at today.

If you want to not only stand out but stand apart from everyone and really transform your style, this is the place for you!

There’s a million ways to wear long skirts and dresses, they can be styled with most tops and accessories. We’re here to show you how to get the right aesthetics and hopefully inspire you! Today we will look at a business style, a casual style and a more dressed-up aesthetic to help you dress in long skirts through all aspects of your busy life.

For Business

When at the office or going into a meeting it’s important to look smart and well dressed. But how do we achieve this while also still bringing some beautiful feminine energy to our outfits, and still feel comfortable?

Why not try out a plain fronted skirt with a crisp white shirt? If this isn’t in your wardrobe, try the same thing with a black dress and the same white shirt layered over the top. This can be cropped to suit your waist by using safety pins to pull up sections and add texture.

For a top tip, try wearing a sports bra over the dress, put the shirt on top and tuck in the ends of the shirt under the band to create the perfect crop.

Another idea would be to add jumpers. When it comes to business attire and long dresses and skirts: layer, layer, layer! A great way is through jumpers, jackets, and accessories. Either a high turtleneck, or a sweater vest go great with a smaller dress underneath as a more oversized look that plays with both texture (from the knit) and size. Or if accessories are more your thing, may we suggest some more unique buckles on your belts. By adding interesting shapes and patterns with your belts you can really add a lot of detail to an otherwise plain outfit. Of course, pair all of this with professional footwear and simple jewellery to compliment it perfectly.

A Casual Style

For a more casual look, once again try layering. This time t-shirts will be your best friend! Tucking your t-shirts or cropping them using the sports-bra method will add so much more interest and can really change up your outfit. Do this with different sizes and styles of t-shirts to change up the silhouettes.

By styling this length skirt with chunky shoes or boots you can give the illusion of height and offsets the feminine energy of the skirt. We suggest complimenting this with matching chunky jewellery and a bag with lots of metal hardware to really juxtapose the aesthetics and make the overall look much more casual.

A Going Out Look

For a going out look it is quite easy to just wear the plain dress by itself and not many opt for just a long skirt on these occasions. But to really step up your style, try something different and really make your outfit stand out from the crowd!

To do this maybe consider accentuating different parts of your body using accessories to really add detail to an otherwise plain dress. A belt laid low on the hips really pulls focus to an hour-glass shape, whereas alternatively wearing a belt on your waist gives the illusion of height and long legs. Adding necklaces can also help pull focus to the decolletage area. Whether this is to pull more detail into a plain, high-necked dress or draw the eye downwards creating the effect of a longer neck.

Also picking a dress with a high cut slit in the leg can also add a lot to an outfit, by adding heels the illusion of height is seen though the length of the leg shown. To counterbalance this consider layering small cardigans, a nice jumper, or a jacket to the dress.

To sum up what we are trying to say; there are a million different ways to wear long skirts and dresses, by thinking a little outside the box or by utilising accessories a once plain outfit can become something extraordinary. We hope these styles help inspire you to do more with your long skirts and dresses because as you can see one long skirt can be worn in so many ways and be used in so many scenarios. Have fun styling your own skirts, we can’t wait to see what you come up with!
